Throughout this course, I've developed acting skills that could be useful in the industry and could set me apart from other actors, such as staying in role, even when I don't have lines. I've also had the opportunity to develop skills with assistance from external companies, such as the 'Broken Hearted Youth Theatre Company'; for example, through workshops with them I was shown how important and useful emotional memory is when intending to make your acting naturalistic. In addition I've come to understand how effective and significant certain things are that prior to this course, I would have found more irrelevant, such as putting effort into learning lines as soon as possible, 'The Cherry Orchard' was a perfect example of this as I learnt my lines very early on in the rehearsal process and this left me with a substantial amount of time to improve my characterisation making me more comfortable with the piece and my interpretation of my character and ultimately, bettering my performance. Overall, I believe this course has heightened my confidence, made me more comfortable when trying new things and less afraid of failure, characteristics that are definitely important to have in the acting industry.
Project Concept
For our final production, we are performing the play Love and Information by Caryl Churchill. Love and Information is a play that explores how information such as feelings, news, the internet and more affects us as a society. The play consists of several short scenes that are isolated from one another and don't seem to relate to each other to make up a story. Another unusual aspect of the play, Is that there are no stage directions, no settings, no character names and the lines are not assigned to a specific character in any scene. This gives us an opportunity to create our own story within the play, since it has such little structure to begin with. I believe this will prevent us from struggling with our characterisation as we have the freedom to create the characters that we're imposing on the lines, we can create our own message to communicate to the audience. I believe that in this piece
Evaluation
To help me evaluate this performance, I'm going to record notes and observations on my blog after each rehearsal to show the progression of the piece. I will record our initial ideas for the scenes and how and why those ideas changed as the rehearsal process went on. I intend to receive peer and teacher feedback throughout to apply them to my characterisation and to see if anything was unclear to them as it would also be unclear to the audience, furthermore I'm going to watch my performance back and note what parts were strong and what parts needed altering or improving, for example, if I need to work on voice projection, if I should include more nuances, or if I need to work on diction.
Proposed Research Resources and Bibliography
To get inspiration for this piece, I'm planning to watch other performances of Love and Information on YouTube, for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5_P9Y7xSAk and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju4f1GskOY0. I will also Stanislavsky's naturalistic from websites such as https://www.city-academy.com/news/what-is-stanislavski-technique/ and https://www.britannica.com/art/Stanislavsky-system as I want to incorporate his naturalistic techniques in my performance to make my acting more authentic.
